Tips to Make Yourself look Great

In no particular order here are a brace of tips to enhance your look and make you feel good about yourself. Some are blindingly obvious (but worth repetition) while others may take you by surprise!
 First up is… Sleep. You should always try to get at least eight hours sleep a night. It not only calms the body but also soothes the soul. And come on, we all know what we look like when we’ve had a very late night and look in the mirror in the morning…

 Next get yourself a Classic Barrette. Because just slipping a simple curved clip into your hair behind one ear shows that you have got understated chic. Just the one mind!

 Get a decent thick body builder for your hair. Mousse makes your hair both look and feel thicker. Make sure you distribute the foam evenly: New York City hairstylist Cedric Celik tells you to put a big dollop in your hand, run a wide-tooth comb through it, then drag the comb from roots to tips. Got that?

 How about a spot of line eraser? Have you come across the latest hyaluronic acid filler, Belotero? It fills lines around the eyes and lips and plumps under-eye hollows, reputedly without the occasional side effects (tiny bumps, a blue tinge) of other fillers; tiny bumps and/or a slight colour tinge.Ok it’s serious intervention, but it lasts 6 months.

 How about a visit to the salon for a quick trim? Just taking taking one inch of hair away can add volume to your style and re-freshen your overall look. It’s also nice to be pampered and to catch up on any local gossip!

 Here’s a quick one that you can do almost anywhere. Slow deep breathing for just 2-5 minutes is great for calming your nervous system and sending away any tensions you may have. The tranquillity and sense of peace also shows in your face and enhances your looks. Here’s how to do it: Close your mouth and inhale through your nose for a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of seven. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of eight. Repeat this cycle until 2-5 minutes have passed. See? Feel better already!

 Refresh your eyes without using any beauty product. Soak a thin piece of cloth such as a thin flannel or old T-shirt in cold soy milk and lay it over your eyes while lying down.
Soy milk is a terrific anti-inflammatory; it also hydrates to smooth fine lines. Cheap too!

 Here’s a great little trick for a magical manicure. First apply one coat of Essie Repstyle Nail Polish (around £10) maybe the silvery Snake, Rattle and Roll and deep green Crocadilly—then hold the magnetized cap over each nail. Hey Presto! A snakeskin pattern appears like magic. Fascinating!

 Finally never underestimate the relaxation and satisfaction you can have with a warm bath, scented candles, and a little ambient music. After a long tiring day…Bliss!

Short-Haired Summer Solutions:Fight the Frizz!

Short hair is becoming much more fashionable these days. You see it out in the streets and on the runways of London, Milan, Paris, Tokyo and New York. Whereas a lioness mane of long hair was the norm a few years ago, more and more often you will see a pixie, a shag, a bob, a lob, to name just a few short hair styles. The styles were great for Spring- but what happens when summer hits? Your hair can get fluffy, frizzy and ends split. In a word your lovely short hair can begin to look tired and uncool. Your friends with long hair can simply have a side braid or top-knot or some other temporary device to get their hair off of their necks.
Tim Rogers is a hairstylist at the Sally Hershberger Salon in New York, creative director for Living Proof, and short-hair expert. He has worked with Linda Evangelista, Carey Mulligan, and Kate Moss to name a few. He gave advice on what to avoid and what to seek out to help you through a hot summer (or a holiday in a hot climate).
You should avoid products with silicones and oils. It may seem that weighing down your hair will give you more control but the reality is that oil and silicone are porous to humidity, so they may not be the things to fight the frizz. Instead he recommends Living Proof’s PHD Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment. It works so well because it has OFPMA, which is a combination of two molecules that smooths frizz and enhances a lustrous shine. There’s an added benefit; unlike de-frizzers that rely on silicones, it won’t turn fine hair greasy the next day— which is often an unwanted fall-out from a de-frizzer. Another tip is to avoid thing to water. Water is one of the more common base ingredients in hair products, but anything with a high water content isn’t going to be particularly effective against frizz
Another common summer trick to make yourself cooler is to get your hair off of your face, such as by using a headband or barrette. But they can look a little too sweet and nerdy. Try a thin double-stranded headband or a head wrap that covers the tops of your ears. A good quality one of either can look really stylish and cool.
You should also wash your hair every day. It’s a good idea to start out the day with nice clean hair because you’re going to get more control that way, and it will be easier to layer in your hair products.
Finally, a suggestion. Go see the seminal Robert Palmer Addicted to Love video with the red-lipped black-haired girls playing the instruments accompanying him. Slicked-back hair is still a great look. Your hair looks wet, but isn’t- but you don’t want it to be crunchy and stiff. The solution recommended is to smooth a generous amount of Shu Uemura Art of Hair Fiber Lift gel through your hair and comb it back. That’s all you need to do except perhaps get some of that iconic ultra-red lipstick from the video!

V&A Fashion from a Bygone Age

The Victoria & Albert museum in central London(often abbreviated as the V&A), is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. It was founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Not everything shown there is old: One of the most talked about recent exhibitions there was of the music, art, costume and life of the pop-star and one-time Ziggy Stardust- David Bowie and featured many of his outrageous stage costumes, lyric sheets, music equipment and a lot more.
The museum’s costume collection is the most comprehensive in Britain, and anyone who has even the slightest interest in fashion should spend some time there. It contains over 14,000 outfits plus accessories, mostly dating from 1600 to the present. Practical reasons mean that the collection is dominated by fashionable clothes made for special occasions and therefore preserved at the time they were made; people’s day-to-day wear tended to be hand-me-down until it was no longer viable and therefore very few clothes of that sort remain (although there are photos and drawings of what they looked like).
The museum got a real boost just before the First World War in 1913 when the V&A was gifted the Talbot Hughes collection containing 1,442 costumes and items as a gift from nearby famous department store, Harrods.
The collection includes such invaluable items as the wedding suit of James II of England. Collections subsequently acquired include items worn by Audrey Hepburn and Ruth Ford and works from the world’s best fashion designers. These include almost anyone who has been anything in the fashion world in the last 50 years-Coco Chanel, Hubert de Givenchy, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Guy Laroche, Norman Hartnell, Zandra Rhodes, Hardy Amies, Mary Quant, Christian Lacroix, Jean Muir and Pierre Cardin. Because it’s a living, breathing, museum its collection is constantly receiving new material- if you’ll excuse the pun.
The V&A runs a world-renowned textile and dress conservation programme. As an example a few years ago an important but heavily soiled and water-damaged 1954 Dior outfit called “Zemire” was restored to displayable condition for the Golden Age of Couture exhibition.
The clothing featured at the exhibition draws attention to the very high level of skill in dressmaking and design carried out by dressmakers and tailors in Victorian times. Being so skilled labour intensive they clothes of this period were expensive to make -they were high fashion comparable to today’s haute couture. A lot of (mainly male) visitors comment upon the absence of men’s clothing. That’s because very few examples of men’s clothing have survived from this period. That’s because men’s suits tended to be worn both at work and socially and so didn’t last that long. Why would they hang up and preserve a suit- even a wedding suit that they could wear for other occasions without having to have an expensive new suit tailored?
Finally, the museum tells us about opposition to some of the clothing made and worn in Victorian times. Members of societies such as the Dress Reform Movement and the Healthy and Artistic Dress Union were critical of heavy restrictive clothing and eye-wateringly tight corsets, which they thought unhealthy and lacking in grace. They favoured making garments from washable fabrics and making dress healthier in other ways. Almost like a temperance society for clothes! We are told that some enthusiastic dress reformers advocated woollen underwear in the belief that it allowed the skin to breathe better than other fabrics. Hmmm.
Go to the V&A museum in London if you get a chance- it’s free!
